Chocolate French Toast

Slices of bread are soaked in a mixture of eggs, milk, and melted chocolate, then pan-fried until golden brown with a crispy exterior. The final dish has a soft interior infused with chocolate flavor and a slightly caramelized surface. This method combines baking techniques and quick frying to create a rich, dessert-like breakfast dish.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices bread slices sturdy bread like brioche or challah preferred
  • 2 cups milk whole or 2%
  • 3 large eggs
  • 0.5 cup melted chocolate dark or semi-sweet
  • 2 tbsp sugar optional, for added sweetness
  • 1 pinch salt

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Shallow dish for soaking
  • Non-stick skillet or frying pan
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Preheat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, melted chocolate, sugar, and salt until smooth and thoroughly combined.
  2. Dip each slice of bread into the chocolate custard mixture, allowing it to soak for about 30 seconds, ensuring the bread is fully immersed and absorbs the liquid.
  3. Place the soaked bread slices onto the hot skillet. Cook for approximately 3-4 minutes per side, until the bottom is golden brown and slightly crispy, then flip with a spatula and cook the other side until similarly golden and cooked through.
  4. Observe for a crispy, caramelized surface with visible browning and a slight aroma of toasted bread and chocolate. Once both sides are golden and the interior is set, remove the slices from the skillet.
  5. Arrange the cooked French toast on a plate and, if desired, drizzle with extra melted chocolate or dust with powdered sugar for presentation. Serve immediately while warm.
